a unique law school for the future
One of Texas Tech University’s most distinguished alums, Mark Lanier, had a vision of helping to create a technologically advanced law school for courtrooms of the 21st Century. Lanier and his wife, along with leaders of Tech Law, collaborated with SHW Group to design a 34,000 square foot addition that would fulfill the academic vision of the law school.
This new addition has to be flexible enough to handle divergent programmatic components, including a 300-seat auditorium classroom, informal breakout areas and an advocacy center comprised of a 150-seat courtroom and offices for career services, alumni development and academic success programs.
going beyond
These spaces were far from average. The auditorium will facilitate large classes, convocation and community meetings. Various open spaces will host pre-function events and allow for professors and students to debate, collaborate and continue discussions from the courtroom or the classroom. The advocacy center includes a trial and practice courtroom, jury room and judge’s chambers.
The vision for making Tech Law one of the nation’s most technologically advanced law schools will be achieved by integrating modern video, presentation and wireless devices.
This technology allows students to present and question remote witnesses, argue cases in a multi-jurisdictional setting in front of judges from various locations and work with evidentiary databases. Digital video capture, advanced court reporting, 3D visualizers, and numerous large video displays empower students with the necessary knowledge of cutting-edge presentation techniques for next-generation trials.
working in a tight space
Constrained by a busy street and an expansive parking lot, the space for the large addition had limited views and size options. In creating a two story indoor atrium, SHW designers made a beautiful outdoor space that was integrated with pre-function and convocation circulation spaces, which often draw people outdoors. This practical non-programmed space is utilized by all during the center’s various events.
The palette for the addition is defined by both the original law school and the buildings throughout the campus. To unify the varying styles, brick and glass from the original facility are repeated while Texas limestone accents from the main campus are incorporated.
