Imagine you are a high school student learning about the solar system. And instead of sitting in a classroom hearing a lecture, you are sitting under an enormous dome, immersed in overhead, high-resolution graphics depicting planets, moons and stars. Digital sound surrounds you. And you feel like you are a part of the lesson instead of observing from the sidelines.
When it opens, this is just what students who attend Charles County Public Schools’ High School 2013 will experience. In addition to the dome, the learning environment will feature interdisciplinary instructional programs that state officials describe as nothing short of revolutionary.
Technology
You’ve already imagined the state-of-the-art, multi-use dome theatre that will be a focal point of the programs. The design is the first-ever application of laser projection and dome theatre at a public school in the United States. It will seat approximately 150 students and use advanced computer graphics to generate immersive full-dome images.
Collaborative learning
An interdisciplinary culture demands that both students and teachers have time and space to collaborate. To this end, High School 2013’s learning environment mirrors the world of work and college. Flexible, open spaces will allow for differentiation and personalization of the learning experience. When integrated courses are co-taught, collaborative spaces can be used for individual study and small group meetings.
Stewardship
Sustainable decisions are at the heart of the design of 2013, with particular focus paid to energy savings and material selection. A geothermal system will provide heating and cooling for the facility and solar domestic hot water heating will be used. Interior finish materials are selected to maximize recycled content and to improve indoor air quality. And an interactive touch-screen educational kiosk system will provide students with accurate, up-to-the-minute facts about the building’s energy consumption and sustainable strategies. |
